Since 2010, Facebook has made a total of 74 acquisitions. More recently, with 26 deals completed since 2014, the Company ranks as the 8th most active acquirer among all US listed tech companies. Facebook is currently in a transaction hiatus after transitioning its core social media franchise to mobile. With photos and videos becoming more common than text, the Company has highlighted video and AR/VR as its next areas of strategic focus and spend.
Facebook uses bold stroke acquisitions to stay at the forefront of social media. Its signature piece, Instagram, was purchased in 2012 for $1B and is now worth ~$30B with 100% revenue growth. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg saw the shift to mobile advertising well before others did, and it now comprises 84% of total company revenues. Likewise, the 2014 acquisition of WhatsApp vaulted Facebook into the world’s largest mobile messaging platform, now 2 billion users strong on a combined basis
